For a match billed the match of the tournament, it has been a pretty boring 1st half with Barcelona having the lion’s share of possession but doing absolutely nothing with it. It could have been so much different though because United were awarded a penalty after 90 seconds when Gabriel Milito was ruled to have handled from a corner kick. It seemed harsh but it is looking for trouble when you raise your hands in the penalty box. Cristiano Ronaldo though who is cool under pressure except in big matches where he chokes, did so yet again as he sent the ball wide of the post.

This was a very interesting game that got better as the match went on with lots of tactical and skillful play from both sides. As expected Arsenal were the slightly more attacking of the 2 sides but Milan had their moments as well but both sides defended resolutely. Cesc Fabregas had 1 of his better games in a while and was very influential in the midfield as both teams packed the midfield with a lot of…

After the match against South Korea, Maradona was cock-a-hoop. And with good reason. Not only had his team won 4-1, but barring a short spell in the second third, had stomped all over the Koreans.

The World cup in South Africa is progressing in full swing, but the comments are that it is not as exciting, nor as skillful, as previous soccer tournaments, which made me reflect and think back to one outstanding occasion, and for good and bad reasons. Maradona’s second goal has been voted by one group as being the greatest in World Cup history. Apparently, he picked up the ball in his own half of the pitch and it only took him eleven touches to weave his way past five England players before stroking the ball around Peter Shilton the England goalkeeper into the net.

Pele the Brazilian soccer legend was pointed out to me by my father when he was only sixteen and seventeen. That is now over fifty years ago. Spain’s search for a goal came after 117 minutes of regulation when Andres Iniesta latched on to a Torres pass in front of goal mouth, and shot home to help Spain win football’s biggest prize of all. In the process, Holland tasted defeat for a third time in a final.

This was more absorbing than entertaining with both sides doing more passing of the ball than actual attacking play. Arsenal, yet again showed they are not capable of holding on to a lead as they just concede cheap goals for a so called big team. They went ahead when Liverpool conceded yet again from a cross, this time a corner kick as their zonal marking failed them with Emmanuel Adebayor left completely alone to put his side ahead.
