Last season was one of the most exciting in years, with some incredibly close battles at the top, and some nail biting matches at the bottom, with two teams being relegated on the last game of the season, with Manchester United topping the table by just two points. In terms of changes of teams, last season Derby County, Birmingham City and Reading all dropped in to the Championship, with Hull City, West Bromwich Albion and Stoke City all being promoted.

After a forty-four year dry spell, Spain has finally managed to win the European championship. After all that time, what could possibly have made this year different? Even after all their past defeats, Luis Aragones was able to turn his team around simply by deciding to ignore the naysayers and develop a side built on Spanish pride rather than on feelings of failure.

For American sports fans who have had their interest in international football piqued, promotion and relegation is a critical concept to understand. First, let me get it out of the way and I don’t intend any offense by this, but the word is “relegation” not “regulation” (I see that mistake made quite often). Now, let me go to the definitions and then I’ll talk about what those two words, promotion and relegation, mean to football lovers outside the United States.

Manchester United are arguably the best club in the world, but this multi million pound club started as Newton Heath L&YR F.C. in 1878, as the works team for the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway depot at Newton Health. They played on a small, dilapidated field on North Road, near the future site of the Manchester Piccadilly railway station for fifteen years, and then in 1983 they moved to play on Bank Street in a nearby town called Clayton.

The most disheartening aspect of watching the currently running European Championships is the various television commentators’ reactions to cheating. We have been witness to several instances in each and every match, yet comments have ranged from the casual mention to not mentioning it at all. It is a sad time, indeed, when we have become so desensitized to diving and feigning injury that we no longer feel the need to comment upon it.

Well, it finally happened. The nonsense with Cristiano Ronaldo has reached the point where it is reminiscent of a serialized television drama, and a rather predictable one at that. Picture the key players: Ronaldo, the young, desirable hero; Manchester United, the woman who currently has him; Real Madrid, the woman chasing him; FIFA, the frustrated school official; and Sir Alex Ferguson, the father of Manchester United. And here is the current installment….

Surely there is something more than just rumour afoot regarding the future of Cristiano Ronaldo. As the rumours continue unabated, and with Ronaldo himself refusing to quell the stories linking him to Real Madrid, speculation inevitably grows and it is still a distinct possibility that the brilliant Portugese striker/winger will join the Spanish giants. Sir Alex Ferguson has said, very loudly, that Ronaldo is simply not for sale and if ‘push came to shove’, then Ronaldo would sit out next season in the stands.

It is almost starting to become funny; all the fuss over one player borders on the ridiculous. Cristiano Ronaldo has made headlines for weeks just because someone decided he should make the move to Real Madrid. Whether the entire thing was initiated by Ronaldo himself, Real Madrid, an outspoken fan or someone else, it is turning into a joke. Manchester United thought they had turned the tables on Real Madrid, but from the looks of current events, the joke is on United.
