USA beat Brazil in the quarter-finals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, a result that looked unlikely after the Americans were reduced to 10 players on the pitch, when midfielder Rachel Buehler was given marching orders by referee Jacqui Melksham. Had USA not scraped through in a penalty shoot out, after a 2-2 thriller, in regulation time, Buehler’s red card would probably have become a major controversy. Not because it was not deserved but because of other incidents that appeared to point to refereeing bias.

Chelsea’s hopes of retaining their crown have faded but the champions could still hope to displace Arsenal in second position. West Brom, in mid-table, appear safe – for now– from the relegation mine, but are merely seven points adrift of West Ham in 18th place. Any points salvaged from Saturday’s game would help, in an extremely tight season.
