There are many factors that affect a team’s ability to succeed on the world stage. Some of these factors are in a team’s control e.g., team strategies, team talent, and team work ethic. Then there are factors that are out of the team’s control, but definitely affect, if not dictate the ultimate fate of the team. For the Americans, they may have American flags draped all over them with starry eyes and great hopes as land on the world stage in South Africa, but there will be three main reason that are out of the team’s control that will contribute to their winning the World Cup in 2010.
The first of these reasons is their draw. The Americans need as much help as they can get. One of the biggest factors that affect any team, but especially one as young and inexperienced as the Americans is a good draw. That is what they got. They actually got a great draw. The biggest hurdle in Group C is the England team. With a great draw means the American team has a chance to work against elite competition, before they face true world class competition like France, Brazil and Italy.
It is clear that the Americans do not have the best talent in the world. If you map their wins and losses on a chart, it reads more like a roller coaster than a winning trajectory with a positive slope. While we don’t have a Ronaldo or a Theirry, they have a team with great heart. The second factor affecting this team is team chemistry. One may argue that team chemistry is within the control of a team, but it isn’t. Chemistry isn’t something that you can manufacture, it has to come organically. This is exactly what’s happening. The Americans do not have a marquee name on their team, but the Americans have banded together and have “fought” together in the trenches. Their team bond is special and something that is only gaining momentum.
The third factor that will help the US raise their American flags at the World Cup is the media’s low expectations. Its interesting that public opinion for the US team is low. At best, one may say they are on the “bubble.” With such low expectations the Americans may “fly” under the radar; this takes tremendous pressure off the team and allows them to go into the matches without external predetermined expectations.
The United States team is poised for greatness even if the reasons they achieve it are not in their control.
