This World Cup, an eighth championship team will be added to the elite club no matter what the outcome: neither Spain nor the Netherlands has ever won the global honor.
The teams could not be different. The Spanish national team is a literal who’s who of the European leagues: David Villa, Gerard Pique, Xabi Alonso, Fernando Torres, Cesc Fabregas and Xavi. The Netherlands have few “star” players but an amazing team that works together as a unit in ways most nations envy. Working together they have been virtually unstoppable in the 2010 World Cup, not only winning every game they’ve played in South Africa but also taking every one of their eight qualifying games. If the Dutch go on to win, they will be the first undefeated World Cup team since Pele led Brazil to the championship in 1970.
The Netherlands have a stronger history: the team has made it to the World Cup finals twice previously, in 1974 and 1978. Spain is the only team to be ranked by FIFA as#1 without winning a World Cup Title. The top ranked team has lost only 2 games in almost 4 years.
The Spanish rely on their attack; when they are in control of the ball they are virtually unstoppable. But when they lose possession they seem like a group of lost and confused soldiers that just can’t seem to get it together. Spain can only hope that they will maintain possession for the majority of the game against Oranje Crush.
Both teams have played well in South Africa. As with any competition, both have also had a significant amount of luck on their sides. Regardless of who wins on Sunday, the game stands to be an interesting one to watch. And whether the title goes to the Dutch or the Spanish, on July 11th the world will have a new champion on their hands.
