To become a highly effective offensive player, there are traits and behaviors that can make a huge difference as to whether you are an average forward or a match winner. Whether you are a player or a coach, there are certain qualities that are required.

1. They pay attention to the whole field. Most goal scoring chances are caused by taking advantage of an opportunity. In the case of a small opportunity, a switched on forward will know what is going on in all sections of the field and can exploit any small opening that may become available.

2. They support teammates. A good team player will always ensure that they bring their teammates into the game, increasing the chances of their team scoring. They give their teammates options as well as creating opportunities for their teammates. Remember, the best players are not necessarily ball hogs!

3. They are alert to what is ahead. The top players will always take a quick look around before making or collecting a pass. The great offensive players are always a step ahead, planning what they will do with the ball before they get it.

4. They are aggressive. If you watch the great players, they will ensure they have plenty of room by keeping their elbows out to increase the space around them. This may also keep the opposition away or back tracking as they do not want to receive the contact. Bear in mind, the great players are not flat out aggressive as this will result in a yellow or red card!

5. They will hold back a little. There is no point showing your hand and doing the same thing over and over (unless it works!). The great players will hold onto the ball if no opportunities open and wait until teammates become available. There is no point busting your gut if you are surrounded.

6. They keep it simple. There is no point having all the fancy moves if you can not score. A good offensive player will be the one that consistently put the ball past the goal keeper or make opportunities for their teammates. Whilst fancy footwork can help, no one is impressed if you can not score.

7. They practice. After all, the old adage “Practice makes perfect” rings true. A great soccer player may not be the most gifted player, but with practice they can become a skillful player. Continually practicing moves can help bring confidence to a player, so much so that hard skills become second nature.

The qualities and skills of a great forward can be taught and learned by dedicated players. The team with the greatest mindset and attitude will always succeed and dedication and practice will help. With the right frame of mind and plenty of practice, you too can become a highly effective offensive player, taking your game to a new level.
