In short, it was the English who invented soccer. The first recorded match took place in the 1100s and resembled more of a brawl than a game. It was a very violent and obscured version of the refined sport we have today and many people got injured- far more than the injuries we get today die to the absence of rules! This lack of rules continued beyond the 1800s when the size of the pitch, the goal sizes and the use of hands were still undecided. So that’s that, the English developed the game and much later on, on 26th October 1863, the football association (FA) was created.

Nevertheless, the game could have been invented even before the first recorded match and there are certainly cases of other ball games with teams and goals before the appearance of football. Over 3000 years ago, for example, the Chinese played a game called Tsu Chu in which a stuffed ball of animal skin was kicked- rather similar! At a similar time in history, Kemari was played in Japan- the aim was to kick a ball through two bamboo shoots. The Greeks also had a similar game called Episkyros and the Romans brought Harpascum to Britain and this may have developed into football over time.

So what is clear is that the question of who invented soccer has no clear answer! As a short, straight to the point attempt at an answer, it was the English. Yet you also need to look at the history of the game and similar sports to tell when the first root of it appeared- it was more a gradual development into football than a sudden invention. Nevertheless, the English made the game into the form we find it today so for the purposes of this article, it was they who invented soccer!
