Pele the Brazilian soccer legend was pointed out to me by my father when he was only sixteen and seventeen. That is now over fifty years ago. Many thought Pele was the footballer player of the twentieth Century but according to internet vote Diego Maradona of Argentina apparently had the edge on Pele amongst those voting in that non scientific poll.
Maradona’s playing career was plagued by all kinds of problems and there was a season when he was seriously affected by drugs. When he played against England he knocked a ball into the goal with his hand. I clearly recall seeing the incident, which Maradona called the hand of God. No, it was the hand of Maradona.
Recent radio phone-in programmes in the United Kingdom leading up to the World Cup have called him a cheat, and that may be true.
We all have temptations and we all go through patterns of highs and low in our own lives. That we cannot deny.
Some things we do and look back on can please us and there are other things we remember and they can make us shrink or shudder.
Writing as s disciple of Jesus Christ, Almighty god has said in His Holy Word that no immoral, impure or greedy person will inherit the Kingdom of Christ and of God. We read of that in the letter to the Ephesians and there are similar strong expressions in Paul’s letter to the Church in Corinth.
When we reflect upon our lives, surely we are all guilty of acts that would keep us out of the Kingdom of God, and yes that might be true. Our lives are tainted and marred and scarred by sin. If we try to make it by our own efforts, there is no way we can achieve that.
That was why a loving gracious God sent Jesus Christ, His Son, into the world. Jesus came to save people from their sins. That was the message given to Joseph by the angel before Jesus was even born.
Many want to be rescued from their problems and pains and sicknesses and difficulties, and Jesus Christ is able to more than help each of us in each in of these areas, but the main purpose of the coming of Jesus Christ was to save us from our sins.
That is why Jesus died on the Cross and shed his blood. He did this as the sacrificial Passover Lamb to wash away our sin and give us the opportunity of having a fresh start and a new beginning.
We cannot purify ourselves. We need the blood of Jesus Christ to wash and cleanse, and then we so need the power of the Holy Spirit to anoint and empower and renew.
This is the Gospel of Almighty God. This is all part of the good news of Jesus Christ. How you respond and react will have eternal consequences. God cannot let sin into His presence and that is why God sent Jesus and that is the reason why Jesus Christ died for you.
God loves you and wants you to be rescued and saved and forgiven and given a fresh start.
